Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His being was unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to look after his herd of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales through the single tree on the mountaintop were his main associates. Day upon day, looking out for his wards inculcated in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome scheme.
Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found no beast.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick continued for a few days more. Yet, one noon, a real wolf actually come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and check here alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
